What is a Semi-Solid State Battery?
1. What is a Semi-Solid State Battery?
A semi-solid state battery is an advanced rechargeable battery that lies between conventional lithium-ion batteries with liquid electrolyte and fully solid-state batteries.
It uses a semi-solid electrolyte system — a composite of solid electrolyte materials and a small amount of liquid electrolyte — to achieve both high ion conductivity and stable electrode contact. Compared with traditional lithium batteries, it contains much less flammable liquid electrolyte, significantly improving safety while maintaining good processability and low manufacturing cost.
Semi-solid state batteries typically deliver higher energy density, longer cycle life, and better thermal stability, making them widely used in high-performance electric vehicles, energy storage systems and aerospace applications.

2.What are the advantages of semi-solid batteries compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries?
Compared with traditional liquid lithium-ion batteries, semi-solid-state batteries have multiple core advantages:
Higher safety: They use much less flammable liquid electrolyte, greatly reducing the risk of thermal runaway, fire and explosion. They perform much more stably in nail penetration, extrusion, high temperature and other abuse tests.
Higher energy density: Semi-solid batteries achieve higher energy density, generally 270–400 Wh/kg, effectively extending the driving range of electric vehicles and reducing weight.
Longer cycle life: With more stable electrode and electrolyte systems, they support longer cycle life, lowering the total cost of use.
Better low-temperature performance: They maintain higher capacity retention in cold environments, reducing performance loss in winter.

Good compatibility with existing production lines
Unlike all-solid-state batteries, semi-solid batteries can be mass-produced with upgraded traditional manufacturing equipment, enabling stable supply and relatively reasonable cost.

3.Applications of Semi-Solid State Batteries
Semi-solid state batteries are widely applied in fields that demand high safety, high energy density and long cycle life.
They are mainly used in electric vehicles (EVs), including passenger cars, commercial vehicles and high-end new energy models, effectively extending driving range while improving safety performance.
In the aerospace sector, they serve as reliable power sources for eVTOL, drones and electric aircraft due to their lightweight and high stability.
They also play an important role in energy storage systems (ESS) for industrial and residential use, as well as in high-power marine power and special equipment.
